BROADMEADOW Magic Football Club has long been figuratively powered by the sun – the Macedonian Sun that is.
Now the Northern NSW State League heavyweights will literally be powered by the sun after installing 40 solar panels on top of their Wanderers Oval clubhouse.
Magic president Steven Foteff said their home ground would be close to self-sufficient with the 10 kilowatt system, which is believed to be a first for a sporting club in the region. The system was installed last week and was paid for through sponsorship, fund-raising and club funds.
Magic are the envy of state league rivals because of their hosting of state league grand finals over the past few years, which bring in many thousands of dollars into the club’s coffers.
Broadmeadow, however, are able to retain grand final rights because of the money and manpower they pour into their facility to make it clearly the best in the competition.
At the forefront of the club’s success is their dedicated army of long-term volunteers who carry out all manner of jobs from concreting to coffee making.
Foteff said their volunteers and supporters were the driving force behind the club, which was working on a five-year plan to redevelop the northern and southern hills at their base.
